In the 2005 War of the Worlds movie, could they have survived without killing Tim Robbins' character?

I've been wondering what might have happened if Ray hadn't killed him. I understand he was desperate and afraid the aliens would hear the noise, but it's not clear if they really would have (the guy yells for several minutes anyway and apparently they didn't hear that) or even if they did come back, Ray and Rachel could have just hidden again like before, and the aliens might have only found Harlan. I can totally see why Ray wasn't willing to take that chance, I'm just curious if they hypothetically could have survived without killing him.
