With July 4 approaching what is your favorite movie that captures something important about the American spirit or experience?
A few movies come to mind when I think of what it means to be American. Or when I think of movies representing some important aspect of American spirit or history:
Rocky, Captain America movies, Top Gun and Maverick, Lincoln, etc.
Of course, there is also American Pie and American Wedding. :p
Some people might think Independence Day when they think of the Fourth of July, but I really didn't care for the movie.
And then there are movies addressing particular issues in America, like the effects of wars, racism, sexism, etc. Some examples are Philadelphia, A League of Their Own, Do The Right Thing, American History X, and Born on the Fourth of July.
But if I had to pick one movie about some aspect of the American experience, I would choose Apocalypse Now. It's a very well made movie, but more importantly, it is a unique experience of strong but opposing feelings and sensations, of terror and beauty, of confusion and purpose, of American supremacy and weakness.
