The Emperor's New Groove (2000) I think is the first animated movie I've seen where the real villain is disguised as the hero of the story.
As a kid, you don't think much about the type of person Kuzco really is. You root for him right away, because this is his story we're following, he's our protagonist so he can't do any wrong and we should feel sympathetic for him. But as an adult, you realize this whole movie wouldn't really have its plot if he wasn't such a horrible person to the people around him.
- The beginning of the movie, showcases how big Kuzco's ego is to point where he carelessly gives demands to the people working in his palace by the snap of his fingers. We get so invested in the groove of the music with Kuzco, that we don't pay any attention to how miserable some of the people look.
- He is also a very unreliable narrator, he states that he was "a really great and nice guy whose life was ruined for no reason" but doesn't take responsibility for his end when he talks about how the people responsible for ruining his life had their reasons cause he ruined their lives first (Yzma and Pacha).
- He shows no remorse or hesitation in firing someone who raised him since childhood, and doesn't bother to help her with finding new work yet still expects her to take care of him when he demands it.
- He was also going to make an entire village homeless and use its entirety as his summer home for his own personal gain, and expects people to deal with it cause he's above everyone.
Even though he does eventually realize and accept that he is a bad person in the end, and redeems himself. All the events that happened in this movie could've been avoided, if he was less cruel. However, at the same time he probably wouldn't have learnt to be humble if not for his bonding time with Pacha.
