I researched 101 filmmakers and the question: What Movie Changed Your Life?

Want to see everything mapped out in a big flow chart? BAM but there's so much information that I can't make it all legible without exceeding image size, so that didn't happen so well.

OBSERVATIONS:

  • The most inspirational film: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK takes the honors, cited four times as an influence (by James Gunn, Michael Bay, Neil Marshall, and David F. Sandberg). APOCALYPSE NOW, 2001, and BONNIE AND CLYDE are cited three times; CITIZEN KANE, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, PERSONA, THE GRADUATE, BICYCLE THIEVES, MEAN STREETS, and THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE are all cited twice.

  • The most inspirational director: Steven Spielberg films appear seven times among the total cited films; Francis Ford Coppola and Stanley Kubrick films appear six times.

  • How predictable were the directors' choices? A mixed bag. Some connections make perfect sense (like Aaron Sorkin, the top writer, inspired by NETWORK, the greatest script), others came out of left field (like a non-fiction documentarian, Alex Gibney, inspired by a surrealist, Luis Buñuel).

  • There are tons of directors named Mike, someone should look into this.

  • French New Wave from 1955-1965 was an absolute powerhouse of filmmaking inspiration in a tight amount of time. Runner-up: American cinema “New Hollywood”, 1965-1979.
