Why did people dislike Babylon so much?

I'm not saying it was the best movie ever, but it was what it promised to be. A Big Badder and Better Damien Chazelle, for better or worse. Sprinkle in some truly amazing craftmanship, acting, and editing and you have a movie that seemed difficult to HATE to me. And as a fan of Damien Chazelle I really enjoyed it. Maybe most of the plot was "sub-text" for a bigger narrative, imo, so the characters were less important than the scene shown, but the point the movie was trying to make was interesting.
