Your favorite escalations of all time?

What movies have the most incredible escalation in your mind? To expand a bit, I see an escalation of a plot as something that takes it from 0 to 100 over a span of time, and watching the start of the movie you can't yet imagine just how far it will go before the end.

Mine:

  1. The Matrix. It was mind-blowing at the time. Unfortunately I was late and I watched Reloaded first, but I can see from a birds-eye-view just how good the escalation of Matrix 1 was. Starting from what you think is definitely just reality, and by the end it's super hero shit, and distortions of reality.
  2. Contact. This movie is a slow burn and the climax isn't even that epic, but it is compared to just how mellow the rest of the film is. In this reflective, soap like drama there is eventually a terrorist attack and a real out of body experience that seemingly takes us to Vega, a planet of a neighboring galaxy, and the final moments go into mindfucks that put into question what actually happened as the story cements its thesis of science or religion.
  3. Sunshine. Another sci-fi movie. A lot of problems with this script where it feels like it's going in different directions, and goes from an existential character study, to a horror movie, to an action film. But the viscerality of the picture and ground-pounding score by Underworld; the distortions of the image, the last 15 minutes of the movie just glued my eyes to the screen. It was a real "I can't believe we went from that to this!" moment.

I love endings that break the speed of sound and makes something happen you weren't ready for. I even like movies that are extremely flawed and just race ahead into some crazy realm that makes you go "huuuuh?" if it means getting a raw reaction, and a strong memory of it.
