Anyone else love Hannibal (2001)?

Silence of the Lambs (SOTL) was added to HBO Max. I watched it for the first time in a long time. Still an absolute masterpiece. There is no fat in that movie. Every moment connects to the next moment.

Anyway, couples day went by and I watched Hannibal on HBO Max.

I gotta say, I think it’s a masterpiece in its own right too. I think if there was no SOTL—people would view it differently.

Spoiler

The antagonist, Mason Verger, was so sick in his own right with his pedophilic history; self-willingness to rip his face apart; and on his boar revenge plot.

The plot with Clarice and Hannibal’s various quotes of her giving up a life with a husband and children for an agency that doesn’t care about her and reduced her to suspension through no fault of her own (a rogue cop with something to prove). Reminds me of corporate life for many of us.

One of the best lines is when Hannibal tells her (indirect quote) that she seeks medals for a job well done when all she really needs to know she’s courageous and incorruptible is to look in the mirror. Wow! What a great line.

Hannibal’s side story with Det. Pazzi and his ancestor Pazzi’s hanging and gut spill—for which Hannibal-does the same to Det. Pazzi. It was a very clever story. Furthermore, just the exhibition on Pazzi; Dante’s letter; and other eclectic sources including the stage play.

Hannibal’s revenge on Krendler for sabotaging Clarice’s career by orchestrating a fancy dinner for Clarice to watch him eat his own brains. Just shocking clever cinema.

Also, just watching Hannibal’s ability to have some sorta humane qualities through his care for Clarice as a sorta faux lover and father at the same time.

And last but not least, I thought Hannibal was gonna pull back on feeding that child a piece of human brains. The fact that he followed through with it show the unrelenting vicious nature of the film from start to finish.
