Watching color films in black-and-white...

I was talking with a friend when this came up, and they suggested I suggest the idea here. Hopefully this helps some of you enjoy movies even more.

Have you ever taken a regular color movie and turned all the color options off to watch the movie as a black-and-white one instead? You should. It can really be pretty neat.

It doesn't enhance or better every movie, and you eventually learn the ones that are worth trying out in black-and-white.

It works best with neo-noirs, I find. In fact the very first movie I tried it out with many years ago was Miller's Crossing. It's an amazing noir film, and seeing it in black-and-white is something else. Highly recommended.

Chinatown. Amazing in black-and-white.

L.A. Confidential. It can make a well-made neo-noir into a film that feels like it came directly from the golden age of the genre.

Blade Runner. Seriously, give it a try. Incredible.

That should be enough to get you started. I've watched dozen of movies this way, and sometimes it can take a familiar film to a new and magical place. I hope it does that for some of you, too.

Have fun.
