Holy Spider (2022) is an absolutely phenomenal thriller about a real life serial killer case in Iran in the early 2000s. I have to talk about it.

I just saw this movie in the cinema and it was so well done. To summarize without spoiling too much of the film, it is a story based on the true events of the Spider Killer. The Spider Killer was a man who went after female sex workers in the name of Allah. He killed about 16 women between 2000 and 2001. In the movie itself, we meet the killer, and a journalist who has arrived in the city to cover the case.

I'm no movie expert, but I think everyone involved did a very good job. The actors, plus the camera work, made the murder scenes very tense and shows you how brutal these were. The actors were very expressive with showing us the emotional turmoil of the characters. The background ambiance sound we hear for the killer fits very well with the atmosphere, and also shows us the mentality of the killer through sound.

There were also multiple important themes that this film commentates on, such as, but not limited to:

- how society treats sex workers and drug users

- the dehumanisation and disrespect that women are treated with, especially in more religiously conservative areas

- corruption in religious institutions and the justice system

- hiding behind religion or ideology to commit heinous acts

I think everyone involved worked together to create a great film that handles the real case with respect. To clarify, while this movie is based on true events, it is not a documentary, so if you want to learn more about the real case, make sure to watch a documentary instead.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes thrillers, movies with commentary about current issues, and anyone who is interested in seeing a film that isn't from Hollywood or the UK.

Sorry if I was not able to explain my thoughts with accurate film terminology or if my writing isn't super coherent, I just feel very excited about this movie. Feel free to ask any questions if you are interested, I would love to talk about it.
