Could be a particular performance that showcased their abilities or a unique role outside of their normal cast types that showed their range or left an impression. Could also apply to a negative impact it had on you.
One that comes to mind for me is Gary Oldman in the Harry Potter series. I've always seen him as villainous in previous roles, it was surprising to see him as a father figure hero-type role, and then contrasted againt him in the Book of Eli, I didn't recognize him in either movies at first since his appearance and immersion in the roles were so different.
