Macbeth (2015) is an amazing medieval drama

I discovered Justin Kurzel‘s cinematic implementation of William Shakespeare‘s „Macbeth“ from 2015 about a year ago when i watched through historical period dramas and i had absolutely no idea back then, that i was about to discover one of my favorite movies from the last ten years, which i‘ve rewatched 5 times since then.

Shakespeare‘s dramas of course speak for themselves. Even today, you can find his blueprints of storytelling everywhere and the tragedy of Macbeth has been told in countless different iterations. But no cinematic version comes in my eyes even close the greatness of Kurzel‘s version. The very beginning already shows that his version is dark, brutal and gritty.

You can also see the attention to detail in every instance with the great set design and costumes, which helps the viewer to instantly be drawn into the medieval time period. The actors are all top tier, especially Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth and Michael Fassbender, who‘s performance of Macbeth probably is the most badass we‘ve seen so far.

My two favorite things about this movie though are the stunningly beautiful cinematography (you can basically take random shots of this movie and present them in an art gala) and the melancholy touching soundtrack by the directors brother, Jed Kurzel. All this leads to one of my favorite movie climaxes and SPOILER >! probably my favorite movie death of all time !<.

I have Macbeth in my mind for so long now, unlike any other movie in ages and it really felt good to vent out my thoughts towards it. If you like medieval periodic dramas and haven‘t seen Macbeth yet, i just can‘t recommend it enough.
