Anyone else think that Signs by M. Night Shyamalan has some of the most unsettling and terrifying scenes?
I vividly recall my first time watching Signs as a kid, and there were several scenes in particular that absolutely terrified me. The film score further added an almost palpable eeriness wrapped in a blanket of suspense to the aliens' covert-like behavior.
Some genuinely terrifying scenes that come to mind:
- The scene when the alien was standing on the rooftop looking directly at Mel Gibson's character through the open window.
- During the video recording of the birthday party in Brazil, one of the aliens can be seen walking past an alleyway briefly glancing at the onlookers.
- When Mel Gibson's character investigated the crop field, the rural night silence was only interrupted by a slight breeze and the alien's guttural clicking.
Or even smaller details such as:
- During the final scenes when the injured alien's reflection showed up on the TV screen.
- When the trapped pantry alien's shadow stopped moving as soon as Mel Gibson's character said "Hello."
- The pitter-patter of the aliens' feet as they scurried outside or on the rooftop.
Even though I'm older now, whenever I watch this movie, it still manages to create a really tense and unsettling atmosphere that lingers long into the night after the movie is over with. No other movie (besides Nope, Annihilation, The Fourth Kind, and Under the Skin) has managed to create a comparable atmosphere in terms of uncomfortableness and tenseness.
