I have to say that the world of POTC created by screenwriters Ted Elliot & Terry Rossio and director Gore Verbinski is really well crafted and fresh. There is nothing quite like it in the cinema landscape. Mixing pirates with fantasy was a smart idea and in the process they created interesting lore to fill up the world with.
But because the most popular thing from POTC is Hans Zimmer, sorry I meant Jack Sparrow, Disney understandably decided to go all in on the said character. But as things have happened that have created distance between Disney & Johnny Depp, I feel it would be a waste to ignore POTC just because there would be no more Jack Sparrow.
There is no one doing pirates on a big scale at the moment. There is no one shooting naval battles extensively at sea. POTC gave all this and is one reason why the movies were big hits. They felt original and unique. Now Curse of the Black pearl showed that you can create a big hit even with a relatively smaller scale. A POTC movie in the style of the show Black Sails could be a great way to take things forward.
And the sequels, 2-5, showed that you can go crazy on the fantasy and magical aspects and still put butts in seats. Since, there are no rules and logic to the magic system in POTC, they can conjure up anything. There is a lot of room to experiment.
A Game of Thrones style political series with hints of fantasy could also be interesting. Pirates are gray characters with shady personalities. You could create good drama out of it.
As much as I love Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner, Mr. Gibbs & Davy Jones, I feel it is best to leave their story and focus on a new story in the same world but not necessarily the same tones/themes.
I know there are a couple of scripts being written so there is a future for the series potentially, with Margot Robbie attached to one of them but nothing is on the horizon as of now.
Just want to give a shoutout to the cool world of Pirates of the Caribbean. In an era where much of world-building heavy franchises depend on pre-existing source materials like Marvel, DC, Harry potter, lord of the rings, Hunger Games, Jurassic World, Transformers etc, Pirates created a nice and original cinematic fantasy world.
