I had no real expectations going into “The Gray Man” other than it was shot in many different exotic locations so was hoping for an updated Bond-type film. We’ve had so many of these types of movies I was hoping for a really smart script and maybe some good action.
The first scene the CIA is recruiting a hard core criminal to be a black ops agent and I knew, from the first 3 minutes, this movie was gonna suck, and god, did it ever. Just mindless action scenes with no stake in any of the characters. I actually fell asleep and had to rewind a few minutes and slog through the rest of it. Literally the most forgettable movie in a long time.
But now, I’m up, so I go over to HBO Max and some movie called “The Counselor” is highlighted for me. Hmmm..it’s got Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem…I never heard of it but what the hell, I’ll put it on.
Right away, people talk like…real people. They’re philosophical, they talk in circles, they’re deep at times, they’re confused at other times. No one is superhuman fighting off all the baddies. It’s bizarre, as life often is… the director doesn’t explain everything to the audience, I’m not 100% sure of what’s going on. The jist of it is that a lawyer is in deep with the Mexican Cartels. There’s some double and triple crossing going on, some good, realistic action.
But…I guess I love cool, weird movies. The cinematography is great, the acting superb, the plot line somewhat convoluted but understandable.
I figured…This must have been the movie of the year back 9 years ago, right? I read some reviews after I finish. I watch some YouTube video reviews. People hated it for the most part. Found it confusing. Not action packed enough. Too philosophical. I found it was written by Cormac McCarthy. It’s like he took typical screenwriting rules and threw them all away. Main characters die. Evil wins. Nothing redeeming happens. And…I absolutely loved it. Maybe I’m just very different from most people, but crap like “The Gray Man” keeps getting made over and over and weird subversive movies like “The Counselor” are heavily criticized, people complain there’s not enough exposition, it’s too hard to follow, and so we don’t get more of those kinds of movies.
It’s interesting to me, if not a little sad.
