Godzillathon #8 - Son of Godzilla: An “interesting” entry in the series

Plot: A plan is traveling over the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly, its controls are scrambled by interference. What caused this? It’s your boy, Godzilla, of course! Godzilla is on his way to Sollgel Island, where an experiment is being run to see if the weather can be controlled. The people running the experiment think the island is perfect for testing, since it’s uninhabited except for a species of giant mantis. There have been setbacks, including the arrival of a reporter named Goro Maki, but they manage to get the experiment up and working. The Radioactive Sonde travels to the air, destroying much of the plant life on the island, as well as mutating the mantises into Kamacuras. After four days, the Kamacuras break open a small mountain, which contains an egg. The Kamacuras break the egg open and out comes a baby Godzilla. The people admire the scene, but then Godzilla shows up to smack some sense into the Kamacuras…

Characters: None of the characters really stand out to me, mainly except for the island girl, Saeko. Only reason I remember her is that she is more of a mother figure to Minilla, the baby Godzilla. Other than that, the acting is fine.

Tone: The tone seems more light hearted than the tones in the previous movies. It’s kind of a downgrade when you expect Godzilla to go this way, but that doesn’t mean that the movie can have its heartwarming moments.

Music: For the most part, the music is light hearted and hopeful (which is the majority of the soundtrack). There’s a few songs that are suspenseful. The ones that I remember the most are: “Main Title,” “The Young Girl From Sollgel Island”, “Parent Godzilla Comes Ashore”, “Saeko and Minilla”, “Godzilla and Minilla I-II”, “Godzilla Vs. Kumonga”, and “Ending”.

Godzilla and other monsters: I’ll go ahead and say this: Minilla’s annoying but he does have some good moments. In one scene, Godzilla is trying to sleep, and Minilla keeps playing jump rope with his tail. Minilla trips and Godzilla wakes up as if to say, “what the hell are you doing?” and Minilla gives him this look that says, “go back to sleep, Dad”. The Kamacuras aren’t that special, just something for Godzilla to fight, but I’m glad that they return in future movies. Kumonga serves as a tough challenge for both Godzilla and Minilla to overcome. Speaking of Godzilla, I’d say he gives the best monster performance since in this one, he shows his “unique” parenting skills.

All in all, this is one of the weaker ones in my opinion, but it does have some heartfelt moments.

Rating: 4/10
