Bong Joon-Ho's Memories of Murder (2003) is a fantastic thriller.

Based on real life events in rural Korea in the late 80s, MoM is a slow burn murder mystery about 3 detectives trying to uncover the identity of the serial killer. It's a very different kind of film to the detective movies made in Hollywood.

For one, it has a very distinct tone. There are some hilarious moments within the film played with a very straight face. Yet it feels natural. You get a very close look at the detectives POV as well as their investigation procedure. In the process you grow fond of the 3 detectives all with with their own quirks.

MoM takes a very matter of fact tone. It doesn't glamorize the detectives or the suspects. There is very little music played to artificially ante up the suspense. Rather the movie slowly builds it up which makes the final act hit hard. All this gives it a very grounded atmosphere.

The staging of the scenes deserves a mention. There are a lot of long, static takes but all adeptly staged where sometimes you feel you are watching a theatrical play.

The acting is very good and Song Kang-Ho, who plays the main small-town detective is a particular stand out.

If you are impressed by Parasite, then give Memories of Murder a go as it is from the same director and is a high quality film.
