Why was the audience lukewarm on Dunkirk (2017) while the critic and Academy Awards crowd loved it?

Christopher Nolan is usually winning the audience over with his films but Dunkirk has above average audience ratings across Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, Metacritic and Letterboxd.

The movie got extremely favorable critic ratings and it got a lot of love at the Oscars. Even Quentin Tarantino called it the 2nd best movie of the last decade.

Why do you think the audience and critics/industry people are so divided on this movie? Does it simply come down to the fact that the movie was all spectacle and the audience had no characters to get attached to? And when it comes to the industry people, do they like it because they can recognize the craftsmanship and high level of filmmaking in general?
