I feel that constantine is a good example. The movie barely resembles the hellblazer comics and Keanu doesn't look or act anything like the comic version of John Constantine. Somehow it all fits together to create an extremely watchable movie.
Another movie that comes to mind is Four Lions. A story about a group of Muslim extremists planing to bomb a fun run. Obviously it recieved it's fair share of criticism but it keeps you laughing right up until the ending before stabbing you in the gut and rolling credits.
