First time watching 'Schindler's List' - rewatched it two more times in as many days

Beyond the obvious themes, a few things need to be said:

  1. It's a very 'Spielbergy' film, which is why I waited many years to watch it. I knew it would have that twee, sacharine, folksy mood despite its dark subject matter. Many scenes contain outright comedy. It really makes it watchable. Had another director taken it on, it could have been three very long hours. I'm sorry if that sounds insensitive.
  2. The interplay between Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes reminds me very much of De Niro and Pacino in Heat. The way Oskar Schindler manipulates those around him is incredible. The dialogue is pretty much word for word perfect. Apparently Sorkin did a pass to tighten up the already good script.
  3. I had no idea just quite how darn handsome Fiennes was as a younger man. Spielberg's treatment of him was blatantly homoerotic, and I won't hear otherwise. Many close ups, dripping with sweat, delicate, lingering, framed with Neeson multiple times like two flirting boys. Truly compelling to watch.
