The Scorpion King (2001) is a better Conan the Barbarian movie than the 2011 Conan movie.

I feel like this movie is completely under appreciated, people love to talk about The Mummy but nobody wants to talk about the awesome action prequel. When it came out, Dwayne Johnson was just a wrestler and this sort of over-the-top action movie that was popular in the 80s and 90s had fallen out of popularity.

The movie is a blast. It's silly, overexaggerated, the dialogue is cheesy, you have to shut your brain off for some of it, but it's still a really good time.

The action is great, the fights look good. You can see what's going on, it's not super fast or super close-up. It's not heavily CGI, it's just actors and stunt-men beating eachother up and swinging weapons. It definitely harkens back to the sword and sorcery action classics.

I loved the original two Conan the Barbarian movies, and the 2011 remake was a huge disappointment. The whole movie had a weird visual style where it looked like it was mostly CGI, the story was all over the place, and it had Rose McGowan doing... whatever she was doing.

Mathayus from SK channeled the Conan energy very well. A weapon master, a tactician, and an agile and dexterous thief, while also just being big and strong and fighting for what's right.

Can't believe I missed this movie as a kid. Highly recommended, perfect popcorn action flick.
