I'd recommend Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom (2015) at this time.

You may already know about this one, but Netflix has a documentary named Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom that covers the 2013-2014 revolution in Ukraine that led to the creation of the current pro-Western/pro-democracy government in Ukraine. It's an intense look at the revolution from the inside, with the viewer watching the situation deteriorate before it gets better. It does contain graphic footage of the conflict, but most people will be able to handle it.

I've never been to Ukraine, but this documentary helped me fall in love with the grit and tenacity of the Ukrainian people. Being a documentary, it may not be the most "objective" source of information, but I do firmly believe that the Ukrainian want and deserve a chance to integrate with the Western world. The invasion of Ukraine is an assault on our way of life (whether you live in the United States, Canada, Europe, etc.), and this documentary shows us the people who laid down their lives to give their country a chance to have a brighter future.

The bottom line is that Winter on Fire is perhaps the best documentary I've ever seen. Watch it.
