Last weekend I saw the documentary ‘American Movie’ and thoroughly enjoyed it. For those of you who aren’t familiar it follows a Wisconsin-based indie-filmmaker making a horror short with the hopes that if it’s successful, he’ll be able to fund the feature film he’s been dreaming about for years. Along the way he struggles with alcohol, inept family and friends acting as cast and crew, poor planning, lack of budget, etc. It’s a very entertaining look at a guy pursuing his version of The American Dream.
What the movie doesn’t address, and what I’ve had trouble finding information about, is why a documentary crew was filming a completely unknown, microbudget amateur filmmaker from Wisconsin. How did the makers of ‘American Movie’ find this story in the first place and what led them to commit two years to filming it?
If anyone had any info on the subject, it’d be much appreciated. Also, I’d love to hear what you thought of the movie. Thanks!
