How was Contact (1997) received when it came out?

Question about Contact (1997). People who remember when it came out and saw it then. How was it received?

I just rewatched it for the first time in about 15 years and it made me think. Why isnt it in talks when talking about the greatest sci-fi movies. What is it lacking? Weak second half? Aged poorly? So again, wondering how it was received back then and how the talks went back in 1997? Cheers!
