I think that this is a way for movie studios to silence bad word of mouth because it's taboo to speak about a movie with someone unless they have already seen it. Since you're not allowed to discuss plot points or anything else of substance regarding the movie, any criticism is limited to simply saying whether or not it's bad without being able to explain why it's bad.
If your entire movie is ruined by me spoiling the ending then your movie isn't worth watching. There are exceptions to this, like with things that have Twilight Zone-esque twists and such where the mystery is a big part of the movie. But for a superhero movie or Star Wars, it doesn't matter.
I watched Soylent Green knowing that Soylent Green is made out of people and I still enjoyed it.
