I watched Dario Argento's Tenebrae in VR last night. I'd seen his Suspiria in the cinema and was mesmerised by the amazing compositions and use of colour in the film, juxtaposing these surreal and vibrant images with gory murders not unlike your bargain-basement slasher. Except this is like if someone got Terence Malick to let loose and make a Friday the 13th movie with a pounding rock band!
He uses an Italian rock band Goblin to score the films, and I thought Tenebrae would be another movie where I'd be blown away. Did not disappoint! With a banger of a theme tune that plays every time there's a murder about to happen, a twisty plot of a whodunnit with a killer bumping off people related to a novel written by a famous horror author while stalking him, and some real heart-thumping moments as you watch helpless to the carnage. I thought particularly these shots of huge architecturally interesting houses seemingly empty and cold to these murders was a really ingenious use of location, really adds so much to the paranoid atmosphere.
Also there's a huge pan shot over all the rooms in this house used to foretell a murder that was way ahead of its time apparently and is basically standard film language now in horror and thrillers.
What a ride!
Also a note on VR movie watching -- admittedly it's difficult to find others in VR to watch horror films on Bigscreen Beta (or to stay for the whole duration) but to watch on a huge cinema screen equivalent was sublime. Funny thing was the day before I put My Fair Lady on in VR and that room was packed out, everyone turned up to watch the best musical of all time! XD
