Groundhog Day (1993) is the perfect film

The core of the film is character development, Bill Murray is so deep in character, there feels like there are some borderline method moments. His comedic timing & acting is unique, subtle & fantastic.

The cast feel familiar & like Phil we ignore the townspeople initially, however towards the end of the film we recognise them & even know some of their names. Almost like a real town. The boy in the tree is a great example of a character who says nothing & generally blends in the background, but is so central to the comedy and development of Phil.

The love story is unconventional, yet appealing. There is so much comfort in Rita’s character & accent even lol.

The overall message is deeply philosophical, with various philosophers, psychologists & religious writers having studied & evaluated the film.

There is also a fascinating personal backstory around the film - Harold Ramis struggling to get anyone to make it, huge rewrites & rumours of tension between Harold & Bill. I had no idea about their relationship & Harold’s death until watching this film.

In my passion for this film I even read the original script. Which is depressing as hell.

It’s funny, warm, comforting, engaging, philosophical & not too long. This film is the movie equivalent to warm cocoa and marshmallows on a cold winters night. It completely changed how I feel about “I got you babe” by Sonny & Cher.
