My story is a pretty funny one lol.
I was born in 1996. Growing up, I had always watched movies and went to see movies at the theater. I distinctly remember seeing films like Shrek and Shrek 2, Freddy vs Jason, Spider-Man, the earlier Harry Potter films, Star Wars Episode III and even Undercover Brother in theaters as a little little kid.
But what did it for me was in 2005 — I was 9 years old — when my mom took me to see Peter Jackson’s King Kong in theaters. I vividly remember the feeling I had — I was completely immersed, completely transported to Skull Island. Peter Jackson took young 9 year old me on an adventure that I absolutely fell in love with, that I felt I had never experienced before at the movies. But it wasn’t so much the sense of adventure…
King Kong was the first film that made me cry. I remember: 9 years old, holding my mom, I cried my stupid eyes out 3 times watching that thing.
This was the film that opened my eyes to what cinema has the power to do. That it’s so much more than just colors and imagery. That it’s a piece of art that has the power to move you, to influence your emotions, to make you not only watch a story unfold but FEEL it unfold.
I actually remember the exact moment that first did it, too lol. It was when the crew crossed that bridge into Skull Island to save Anne while James Newton Howard’s beautiful, epic, haunting score played over. Young me was like WHOAAAAA. It completely lifted me off my seat and enfolded me into that world.
It was really from seeing King Kong onward that I started to develop this deep appreciation for films and for the moviegoing experience. It kick-started my love for films and even for filmmaking (I’m working on my next short film now 🙂), and drove me down this road as I got older of going back and discovering the classics.
