Nothing about them was conventional, from their origin story (three of the band members were childhood friends, but they all came together as a result of sharing a cocktail at a Chinese restaurant, and getting up and jamming along drunkenly with each other), to their performance style, the guitar stylings, performances...hell, I could go on and on about this.
Oingo Boingo—Again, nothing about them really was conventional—they got their founding as a surrealist street theatrical troupe and then developed as a band from there, amongst other things. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oingo_Boingo.
Frank Zappa—The guy was definitely eccentric, no doubt about it, but also helped open the doors for more experimentation, and led a VERY colorful life. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Zappa.
Klaus Nomi—Again, the guy was...eccentric to say the least, but also a genius. Unusual voice (androgynous, as was his appearance), weird as hell performances that teetered somewhere between nigh-incomprehensible performance art and regular concert, and also was known for unconventional outfits. His short life was just as colorful as one of the guys he toured with, David Bowie, but was cut short at 39 from AIDS, just as his career was taking off—one of the first people in the arts community that was known to die from it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Nomi. Also known for being a countertenor, a rare voice in music—let alone pop music.
The Plastic People of the Universe— https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Plastic_People_of_the_Universe. Hooooo boy. Their entire backstory sounds like something lifted straight out of a Cold War thriller, but it happened in real life.
