Thank You, Mr. Burnham (A Response to Bo Burnham - Inside)

Tonight, my fiancee and I sat together and watched Bo Burnham's latest special "Inside." While neither of us knew exactly what to expect going in, "Inside" was anything but that. This is our open letter to Bo, to thank him for his incredibly hard work on this project, and to try and reach out on some personal level to say that it's okay to feel this way.

For those that have not yet seen it, do so now. I am not paid to say this, neither myself or my fiancee are in any way associated with Bo Burnham or with Netflix. His work on "Inside" is something I feel the likes of which I have not seen in any medium for what has felt like ages. "Inside" needs to experienced now, as we begin to leave this purgatory. It needs to be acknowledged, on a personal level. Bo captured the feelings of despair, the feelings of hysterical apathy, and the deeply introspective existentialism that has washed over the entire world during 2020, and has continued well into this new year of 2021.

All of this to say that parts of this special were downright hilarious, obviously. Mr. Burnham is afterall a master of his craft, but this special was a whole other beast entirely. "Inside" is at times far too real, and painful to watch. Painful in the way that is to watch the ones you love slide into a never ending despair that you are powerless to stop through a thin glass screen. Yet he says nothing that so many of us have not ourselves thought of during this last year. Even if we hide it better than some, so many of us have felt that numbness to all that has happened and that is still happening in our world today. This special was like a flare being sent up from the middle of the deepest and darkest forest of Bo's emotional turmoil. Yet in the end, after witnessing it all in its totality, we felt better. We felt not so alone, not so crazy. We felt like for once, instead of just alternating between constant doom-scrolling and watching other things to completely ignore the problems of the world whenever we became overwhelmed, we were having the first real dialogue with another person, from a totally different lifestyle, that was feeling the same emotions and the same dread that we were, and we laughed nearly the whole way through because we got it.

So to those of you that didn't know it was out yet, watch it. To those that never heard of it, watch it. To those that have already seen it, did you have a similar reaction, or did you feel differently?

And to Bo, Thank you for sharing this. It was raw, it was at times too much, but it was all unrepentantly human. If I may say so, from all of your fans, we wish you the very best. We are still here, and we will still be here whenever you feel ready. This, I personally feel, is only the beginning of a whole new chapter. And please release the music soon on spotify so I can listen to it on repeat. Some of us neeeeeed this.
