I was reading about films that have had a lot of extras and began wondering about the logistics of dressing and equipping these extras, films like Gandhi have a lot of extras but they don't really need props but films like Waterloo 1970 had 15,000 authentically dressed extras, it's similar with Lord of the rings, Ben Hur and Spartacus.
The cost of producing all the equipment for a one time use seems crazy, what happened to the clothes and arms used in these films, are there thousands of prop weapons, uniforms and armour just sitting in a warehouse somewhere? Do they get retained for possible future movies? or maybe converted for other movies?
