It seems as if movies go through eras - from the Spaghetti Western era of the late 60s and 70s, to the Coming-Of-Age films of the 80s, to the historic epics and disaster films of the 90s - there always seems to a new movie genre taking hold of popular culture. We’re now living in the latter stages of what film history will eventually call the “Superhero Reboots Era of the early 21st Century”
At this point, vampire films have been played out, Hollywood traded epic historical melodramas for superhero epics to make big bucks at the box office, and the comic book franchises are maturing. In fact, the best of the comic era on the big screen is probably behind us, especially with the rise of episodic streaming, which is better suited for telling many of these stories.
So, what’s next? What’s the next “big? genre that will define the next film era? Extra points if you will share your prediction of the first “record breaking” film of the post-pandemic world.
