Rewatched The Drop for the third time and was amazed that I can keep seeing new things in this movie. Specifically, parallels between characters.
When Bob first finds Rocco, an abused puppy, he mistakes it for a boxer. Nadia corrects him, telling him it’s a pit bull, to which he responds “that’s a dangerous dog”. But Rocco isn’t, he’s just a sweet puppy. By contrast, everyone who meets Bob perceives him as a boxer: essentially harmless. As we learn, however, Bob is a far more dangerous breed.
Another fun one: at the start of the movie cousin Marv berates the patrons for not letting go of Richie Whelan’s death. However, his motivation for orchestrating the robbery is to pay for his father’s life support. As his sister says, “he’s dead” - presumably brain dead with no chance of recovery. Marv, however, refuses to let go, ultimately getting himself killed.
One last one: very early on the camera pans over Bob’s heating oil tank in his cellar. At the end of the movie we learn that’s where he disposed of Whelan’s body. It’s both literally and figuratively in the foundations of his house, or his psyche. Bob is tormented by guilt. He’s able to produce $10k to give Deeds in exchange for Rocco - why would Bob have that kind of money lying around? Likely because it’s his share of the money he and Marv took from Whelan, but Bob felt too guilty to ever spend it.
