This was just added to Netflix recently and I wanted to give my thoughts on it after watching it tonight. The main draw here is the true story that it’s based on, as movies like this that are relaying such unbelievable real life events have to screw up pretty badly in order to make them seem uninteresting. Fortunately, though, this one does not do that.
The acting is quite good for the most part. Jonah Hill in particular gives a bombastic and very entertaining performance as a larger than life figure who provides most of the film’s strong cynical humor. In addition, while she isn’t given much to do, Ana de Armas is always a pleasure to see and does her best to infuse some passion into her role. Furthermore, Bradley Cooper also does some interesting work in what appears to be meant as a surprise supporting role that one of the Netflix thumbnails unfortunately spoils.
Another strength is the direction by Todd Phillips. He uses a very warm color palette filled with yellows and oranges that makes the film quite pleasing to the eye. He also favors a handheld approach that never slips into shaky cam, allowing the proceedings to maintain a sense of urgency and reality without sacrificing clarity, even during the occasional action sequence.
My main problem with the film is the narration, which I know is something that many film fans despise. Personally, I think it has its uses, especially in true stories like this that need to deliver a lot of information in a brief period of time. In this case, though, I think it goes overboard. Some of it worked fine, but other times it felt like it could have been cut without really losing anything. Another issue I had is Miles Teller’s performance. He isn’t bad by any stretch, but he also doesn’t really bring anything interesting to the role, and the character ends up just feeling like the lens through which the audience views the events.
Overall, though, I really enjoyed this one, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s interested in this story. What are your thoughts on this one?
