Why did Hooper originally drop the tooth in Jaws?

It is well known that Spielberg reshot the scene where Hooper drops the tooth. He wanted one more scare and had the head pop out and frighten Hooper. Great scene. However, it creates some issues of continuity in the next scene whereby they don't even mention Ben Gardner's dead body, and simply say the 'boat was chewed up' and Hooper 'had an accident'. My question is, what did that scene originally look like? Why did Hooper drop the tooth? What was the accident?
