Upon reflection of movies like Slither, I really think James Gunn has the sensibilities and talent to ride the sort of line between horror & comedy that's necessary for Gremlins. I think he can also add the proper ammont of silly bullshit to allow the movie to maintain (at most) a PG-13 rating. James Gunn has gotten away with a lot of stuff in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, even under Disney.
The top three people I'd want to direct a Gremlins continuation/reboot would be:
Joe Dante, Sam Raimi, or James Gunn.
