Desperate to become an actress Mulligan contact famed screenwriter Julian fellowes after seeing him give a lecture at her school. She wrote him a letter saying that she was serious about acting and how she was meant to be one. She was then invited for a dinner by Fellowes and his wife where they were able to pull strings to get her an audition for pride and prejudice. She got the role and her first role was in a major film starring Keira knightly. Mulligan went from drama school reject to an established actress pretty fast
