Spontaneous (2020) is a unique and surprisingly touching teen movie

Before I say anything else, please don't watch the trailer! It ruins a lot of otherwise nice surprises the movie has in store.

Summary: Mara (Katherine Langford) is in her senior year of high school when something begins happening to her classmates; they randomly explode, leaving nothing but blood where a person once was. Spurred on by the fact that this fate might catch up with her at any moment, she starts a romance with her sweet-natured classmate, Dylan (Charlie Plummer).

This film runs the gamut between a bunch of different genres, from romance, dark comedy, horror, and drama. I think it nails the tonal shifts really well and hits surprisingly hard (I was blinking back tears multiple times).

Some people have theorized that the plot is a metaphor for school shootings, but I consider it to be much broader than that--that at any moment, you or a loved one can die unexpectedly. It isn't right and it isn't fair, but the survivors have to find something to keep living for before they too are gone.

I think this is near the peak of the teen movie genre due to how it successfully pulls off an otherwise laughable premise, and it's not afraid to get dark. I really recommend this film!
