God this movie scared me as a child. the actor playing the Djinn looks so damn scary without makeup, honestly more scary than when he shows his real form. I am not a proponent of rebooting everything, but I feel this movie could have an interesting modern take. I love how the premise of the "Genie" the Western world is familiar with, is turned on it's head. The origins and truth behind the myths are far darker. Granting people's simple wishes, with an imaginative, and typically fatal catch, makes for a good popcorn horror/thriller.
Some of my favorite wishes:
When the art appraisal boss wishes for $1M, and the scene cuts to his mother listing him as the beneficiary of her $1M life insurance payout, then cuts to her boarding a plane that explodes on takeoff. Twisted.
Another is when the Black store clerk is helping him, and he asks her if she'd like to be beautiful forever. She shyly agrees, and the scene cuts to him leaving, and a mannequin standing where she was standing.
The movie is SUPER cheesy, and the dialogue is absolutely dreadful, but the Djinn is very convincing and intimidating in his role. I love how throughout the movie, they play up on the fact that he's thousands of years old, and is aloof about technology and social standards. This movie is similar to the Saw series, but with wishes instead of traps. Basically, you're fucked no matter what most of the time.
Oh, and get the original Djinn actor if he isn't dead or geriatric! He was perfectly creepy with the way he exaggerated the syllables at the endsssss of eaccchhh worrdddd.
