(Immortals 2011) on paper, this movie should have been perfect, why the movie does not live up to expectations and why I still like it regardless

TL;DR: a visionary director, a fantastic cast, and a mythic story with amazing visuals, this movie should have been a standout, but it is overlooked and barely remembered. The critics are right, it is flawed, but the film is not without its charms.

Immortals is a beautiful film. The way Tarsem Singh uses color and scale is impressive. The mythological story is fresh, but the film never seems to find a foothold. Based on the first few trailers for this movie, I was pretty excited. The sense of grandeur the film suggests is impressive, and the fight scenes with the gods versus titans are brutal and bloody. So why didn't it connect?

What I don't like: I gotta say for me its Micky Rouke. The performance is boring and flat. Old mickey seems like he is always hungover at work. Another reason is that the gods' world never seems to collide with the Humans satisfyingly. There are just some many ways to make this movie better by incorporating the gods and humans more, but they don't.

What l do like: The scale and visuals of this film are incredible. Each frame is a hyper-real painting. It stands alone among the films I have seen in its sheer use of color. The fight scenes are great, and Henry Cavill is definitely green but gives it his best shot.

What I like the best is that the movie tries to be different, it swings for the fences, and though it falls short, it is still a great way to spend a hungover Sunday morning.
