If there are Great American Novels, what are the Great American Films?

The term Great American Novel (GAN) refers to a canonical novel that is thought to embody the essence of America. It is generally regarded as being written by an American and dealing in some way with the question of America's national character.

Recently rewatched Winter's Bone, and I know that for some reason Jennifer Lawrence gets a bad rap around here, but she is genuinely phenomenal in this film. I'm not trying to be hyperbolic, but I legitimately believe this film to be a Great American Film, embodying the essense of poor, rural, and drug addicted America. As someone who grew up poor in the Rust Belt with two much younger sisters, the theme of poverty with a bad home situation really resonated with me. Overall, I felt like the "character" of the film was something that was immediately relatable as someone who experienced similar (but not exact) experiences.

The post isn't just to name great films made by Americans, but to highlight those films that utilize America as a backdrop to the extent that it becomes a character in it's own right.

So what are some of the Great American Films?
