80 years ago today the first film appearance of the comedy team of Abbott and Costello was released to theaters. The pair became the highest paid performers in the world during WWII.

Originally teaming up as a live stage act for the burlesque circuit in the 1930s, their rapid fire word play routines soon made them popular radio entertainers which led to Universal pictures signing them for a supporting role in the musical comedy A Night in the Tropics (1940). Performing five of their routines, including a variation of the classic "Who's on First" they stole the picture and were given a two movie contract the first of which Buck Privates (1941) was a huge success and made them certified movie stars.

Out of the more than 35 films they starred in between 1940 and 1956 (27 for Universal), Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) is probably their most well known today.
