You probably haven't seen Samson & Delilah (2009), but you should.

There is a frequent distaste and general lack of excitement when it comes to Australian cinema. Which is a shame, because it means every year there are some genuinely supremely overlooked films. Some of which I believe are worthy of placing on all-time best movie lists.

And Samson & Delilah (2009) is one of them.

I wont spoil the plot, because I really urge you all to see it. But to give some clarity on the story: it follows two teens, the titular characters, as they live out their lives in an extremely remote rural aboriginal community in Australia. The film explores cultural traditions and the very different family dynamics of one Australian Indigenous micro-culture, compared to the normal western life most of us moviegoers don't usually think twice about.

The performances are so good, it's mind-boggling to even think that the main cast aren't trained actors of any kind. The little use of dialogue allows some truly beautiful and fresh camerawork to tell an emotionally shocking, at times unpleasant, but necessary story which highlights the way Australia's western culture has begun to mesh with a traditional, grounded way of life. And the result is kind of horrifying, we witness moments of identity confusion, and hurtful treatment of humans as a result.

The film is just really well paced and beautifully made. It revealed to me and reminded me that life is full of so many different people and cultures - with different ways of thinking and acting on a day-to-day basis. I can only hope that cinema like this continues to reach more people.
