Thoughts on Moonrise Kingdom

Jimmeny Cricket he flew the coop!

Wes Anderson’s chef d’œuvre, this movie combines his love for character and style with his themes of unconventional relationships and childlike wonder better than any of his other work.

It plays out as if it’s a middle schooler’s fantasy, but one they’d be too awkward to follow through on. Large romantic gestures and bold moves like “what kind of bird are YOU” and running away together are everything you want to do but don’t have the guts to at 13. That said, Sam and Suzy are so well written and mature beyond their age, making you, the audience, believe so much in their relationship that you’re ecstatic when these two teenagers get married.

The side characters fill out the movie such that this island feels like a full and living world. I particularly liked Ed Norton’s character as the military “khaki scout” leader. He starts out so strict but you start to see his heart shining through, to the point where he and Bruce Willis become quasi father figures to Sam.

Also, name better movie parents than Bill Murray and Frances McDormand, PLEASE!
