When and why Hollywood replaced 'Theatre' with 'Realism'

Hey, I'm looking to gather information on the above topic. If you watch a Hollywood movie all the way up to c.1970, the style and acting is very theatrical. It comes across more as an recording of a play as opposed to what we consider films today. So, I'm looking for any opinions on why this change occurred, how it occurred, or any other insightful viewpoints on the subject. Whether you agree or disagree, I'd like to hear your viewpoint. Thanks in advance.
