Was watching Oliver and Company again and just could not get over how truly vicious Sykes was as a villain. Kidnapping kids, threatening murder and torture, trained his dogs to kill on command, amd of course his absolutely insane rampage through the subway system with his car.
It seems like villains lately are either played for laughs (Despicable Me), thrown in as a second thought (Frozen) or just misunderstood (Moana).
In recent memory the last great villain would be Doctor Facilier from Princess and the Frog and even then he was pretty much on the back burner throughout most the film. Other Mother also comes to mind and she was awesome.
I guess movie makers do not want to "expose kids" to characters who are maniacal and just pure evil - going with the idea that they are too sensitive to such things. We have seen a huge turn from more serious kids films that dealt with real themes ( UP, All Dogs Goto Heaven, Coraline, Secret of Nimh) and more of the nonsensicle silliness of poop eating Chipmunks, peeing lemmings, and fart gun toting minions. But none of these recent movies have a serious hardcorr villain.
But with that said - why don't we also talk about our favorite Pure Evil villains from our childhoods?
Ratigan - Great Mouse Detective. Win all aroumd thanks to Vicent Price's performance but his cold murderous mentality comes as natural as him breathing when he feeds a henchman to his cat. Not to mention the sheer scare factor of him becoming a full blowm psychotoc rat with talons at the end of the movie.
Carface - All Dogs Goto Heaven. This mob boss first betrays his business partner and has Charlie sent to the pound before murdering him in cold blood. Kidnaps and tortures a little girl, shoots Charlie during a driveby, has his cronies beat Itchy to an inch of his life before burning down Charlie's casino, only to try to drown that same little girl! Carface was a classic mob villain in every sense of the word!
Thrax - Osmosis Jones. Dude was just straight up vicious. Purposely killing and infecting people in order to get the world to recognize him as a dangerous virus. He is as ruthless as he is cool to look at with his black trenchcoat and sunglasses. One of the surprisingly most vicious villains in an animated movie.
