Why are animated movies geared toward children?

I understand that many of these animated movies can be enjoyed by adults but why are they specifically targeted towards children?

What is it about animated movies that don't generally relate to adult audiences? Is there a "Pulp Fiction" or "Psycho" for animated movies? Could more realistic animation bring in older audiences?
