James Gray is a very under-appreciated filmmaker

After watching his two most recent films, Ad Astra and The Lost City of Z, he is one of my favourite directors now. Both of these films are pretty introspective and have incredible character development.

His movies tend to be more ethereal and atmospheric. A huge emphasis is placed on the score to hypnotise you. They are definitely not for everyone, but for those who are open to art-house films and have a sense of self-awareness. This way, we can place ourselves in the character's shoes and understand why their goal is so important to them. Ad Asta was advertised heavily and got the wrong audience. The trailer for The Lost City of Z isn't too bad, but gave away a bit too much. Both these movies should definitely be between 7-8 on IMDB, and they are a must watch for film lovers.

I haven't seen James Gray's other films yet, but keen to watch them now. Although the other films don't sound too great upon face value. But, with Gray's direction, expect to get hypnotised.
