Portrait of a Lady on Fire's cinematographer interview: Red Monstro digital camera used

There's been somewhat of a controversy regarding the look of the images from digital cameras on r/movies.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is an interesting example, it's very well composed and its images have a painting-like quality to them. Not to mention that it's a period piece shot to looks like one. Nothing like a super-saturated blockbuster.

Yet, it's shot on digital, and on top of it, it's shot on Red, not even Alexa despite how Alexas are reputed for having a more filmic look.

Also interesting is that it doesn't seek to emulate film in every aspect. Despite their delicacy, the images are extremely crisp, noise-free and grain-free. Like Steve Yedlin said, you have immense freedom with digital, the final look is up to the cinematographer.

But Claire Mathon (PoaLoF's cinematographer) says it better than me.

Screentests comparing 35mm-Leica Summilux and RED Monstro-Leica Thalia convinced us to choose the RED Monstro for its incarnation and the presence that were apparent from the first faces we filmed. I think that the size of the sensor and the finesse of these images, shot in 7K, participate in creating that sensation. But the tests also gave us a film reference we used when we colour timed the digital images, particularly in its contrasts

The rendering of skin colour was primordial in my work. I sought both softness, with no hard shadows, a slightly satiny and non-realistic result that remains natural and extremely living. The makeup artist, Marie Luiset, and I together took the time to visualize this max of lens/lighting/filter/makeup over the course of several tests with the actresses and the costumes. We had to blur the raw and contemporary aspect of the faces, while keeping the precision and the nuances of the colours, but finding a rendering of the skin that would bring a bit of the period into the image through its picturality. We often discussed the faces in terms of landscapes.
