One of the most common yet overlooked differences between movies/shows then and movies/shows now

I feel like movies/shows these days utilize background music far more than they did in the past. Whether it be in happy, sad, or funny moments, there's always a tune to go with the scene. Whereas older movies/shows were much more quiet, making scenes feel more real and allowing the viewer to immerse themself in the dialogue more. Background music still existed, but it was used sporadically rather than regularly, and for the right moments more often than not. But today, movies/shows use background music all the time, and it's mostly hit or miss. There are exceptions (Better Call Saul, etc.) that manage to fit the older method, but this should be the rule. Hopefully Hollywood will return to sporadic use of background music, but I highly doubt it.
