SPOILERS . . . At the end of Shutter Island it’s revealed that our protagonist, Teddy Daniels, is actually a patient at the asylum and that that giving him free reign on the island was a last ditch attempt at curing him of his illness. It then moves to him and Chuck, his “partner,” sitting on a flight of stairs outside smoking cigarettes, Teddy makes a comment to chuck, referencing him being a marshal and investigating the island. This comment leads to Teddy calmly walking towards his death, accepting it, as if this is what he wanted
A theory I have is that he was cured of his insanity, at least for a little bit, and he didn’t want to live with the guilt, grief, and shame of killing his wife. So he pretended he “relapsed” into his US Marshal fantasy in order to humanly die.
